Two Scholarship Opportunities

For students who would like to study in Taiwan during either the upcoming summer or the 2022-23 academic year, or after graduation this June or later, the Taiwan Ministry of Education offers two generous funding opportunities.

The Taiwan Scholarship is a multi-year fellowship that can be used to support your study in a MA or Ph.D. degree program in a Taiwan university. It is great for any graduating seniors. The scholarship requires you to have reached the intermediate-level in Chinese (Mandarin) and obtained the Level 3 Certificate in the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL) when applying. You may use the following website to search for institutions in Taiwan (https://lmit.edu.tw/).

The Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES) offers great flexibility to support your Mandarin study. You may apply for a two-month summer award, (i.e., June and July 2022 or July and August 2022), or a 3-, 6-, 9-, or 12-month term of award starting from September 2022. (Unfortunately, you are not allowed to combine a summer and an academic-year award). This scholarship can be used for studying Chinese (Mandarin) at any Taiwan institution (e.g., you will be able to use this scholarship if you are accepted by ICLP).

More importantly, if you are awarded one of these scholarships, you will be allowed to apply for an entry visa to study in Taiwan. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan’s border is still closed for most foreign visitors.

Williams Endorsement

If you have taken CHIN courses at Williams and would like to receive an official endorsement to support your application from the Chinese program for these scholarships, please fill out this online form as soon as possible and no later than March 1, 2022. You should also contact individual professors who can write recommendation letters on your behalf as early as possible. If you have never taken CHIN courses at Williams, you are still welcome to apply for these scholarships on your own without our program endorsement. If you have any questions regarding this endorsement process, please email Professor Li Yu (Li.Yu@williams.edu), Chair of the Department of Asian Languages, Literatures, and Cultures.
