The Clark will be hosting several events celebrating Japanese Culture in honor of our latest exhibition Japanese Impressions: Color Woodblock Prints from the Rodbell Family Collection that I thought your students or staff might be interested in attending some of these events.

The Clark has a free film series of Japanese films on Sunday afternoons entitled Colors of Japan:

  • The Makioka Sisters – Sunday, Jan. 22, 1:30 pm
  • Gate of Hell – Sunday, January 29, 1:30 pm
  • Kwaidan – Sunday, February 5, 1:30 pm
  • Equinox Flower – Sunday, February 26, 1:30 pm

The Clark has events related to Japanese art making:

Clark After Hours – Friday, February 3, 7 pm, $10
Kick winter doldrums to the curb with a night out with friends at Clark After Hours in the spirit of Setsubun, a Japanese celebration of ending winter and good luck in the coming spring. Learn more about Japanese ceramics while enjoying private evening access to special exhibition Japanese Impressions, then channel the art of “golden joinery” to create your own kintsugi collage.

Shodo Lecture and Demonstration – Sunday, February 5, 1 pm, Free
Japanese calligrapher Masako Inkyo presents a demonstration of the art of shodo using landscape images from works on view in the exhibition. Shinko Kagaya, professor of Japanese in the Asian Studies Department at Williams College, will introduce the artist and provide commentary during the demonstration.

The Clark has a series of free screenings of Studio Ghibli movies on Wednesday evenings:

  • The Tale of Princess Kaguya – Wednesday, February 8, 6 pm
  • When Marnie Was There – Wednesday, February 15, 6 pm
  • From Up on Poppy Hill – Wednesday, February 22, 6 pm
  • Only Yesterday – Wednesday, March 1, 6 pm

The Clark will also be co-sponsoring three screenings of the film Miss Hokusai at Images Cinema on March 11 and March 12.
